It was reported in "The Times" today that the Sundance Film Festival will be coming to London in 2012. Setting up shop at the O2 from April 26th to 29th in just over a year's time.

Having become an iconic event in the US receiving world-wide acclaim for unearthing new talent from all corners of the Globe this is very exciting news. But, as one reads on it seems rather sad that the UK event will consist entirely of American films and the purpose of the visit is apparently to drum up support for American 'Indy' talent in the form of both audiences and investment.

Is this what the British Independent Film Production sector needs right now, something to lure away, already scarce, investment and audiences from British films? By excluding them altogether from the event and making this an exclusively US cultural platform it could be seen by some as unhelpful.

No doubt the organisers and their high profile superstar front man would not intend anything like that at all.
Although it might still be worth bearing in mind that the Sundance Kid was a Bandit.
