MM is in Cannes right now

Hello, MM is in Cannes;

A wise chum once said, "I can handle the disappointment, it's the Hope I can't stand" and Hope is what Cannes is all about. Regardless of the multi-million pound productions which appear each year, the majority of attendees at the Festival and it's parallel film 'Market' are looking for a way to make their picture break.

Whether at script level or in completed form the film makers here strive to gain the edge. Some will do well, some not so well, some have been coming for several (many) years to pitch the same project. All will leave having felt they achieved something, they will certainly have learnt something. This is an extraordinary market place!

Opening with Ridley Scott's 'Robin Hood' which while not in competition is an aspirational epic; the 63rd festival also aspires to be the best; and why not?

One member of the audience was heard to remark that Ridley Scott had "rewritten British history" in making the film, but surely he is rewriting British Legend and therefore, anything goes? Whatever else this film is, it is a spectacular entertainment and that is kind of what we want, isn't it?

Of all the benchmarks of success in film making surely one of the most telling is how many people will pay to see the work and this 'Robin' will put a load of bums on seats.

Cannes is not yet up to speed, with a lot of people unable to get a flight due to the inexplicable decision to move the Monaco Grand Prix to this weekend instead of where it traditionally sat at the end of the Festival fortnight. Whoever chose to do that has done neither event any service and attendance will be down at both as a result.

It is only Thursday, but the crowd outside the Petite Majestic wasn't large enough to prevent them closing a lot earlier than one would normally expect.

More anon, MM
